WINEMAKER’S NOTES:
Optimum growing conditions with a crowning harvest mark the 2014 vintage. A saturated cardinal hue belted in garnet is revealed in the glass. The nose brims with an impeccable oak profile with shaded oak tree accents. A mineral cast of alluvial soil can be detected as well, which frames a vibrant perfume of red berry fruits, cassis, cardamom, and exotic spices. The entry bursts with a vibrant blueberry and cassis concentrate that is rounded out with the richness of a creme brulee, or crema catalana. The mid palate has vibrant acidity with distinctive mineral notes of garrigue, stone, and schist. Closing with purpose, the wine boasts silky tannins and a lengthy finish of sublime richness. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan
TASTING NOTES:
Dave Phinney’s Department 66 project is based in Maury, Richard Case and Bob Doyle running the winery in his absence. Some of the first vineyards Phinney owns, they have amassed about 120ha, built a winery, and have been up and running since 2009. This 2018 boasts raspberry cola, brandied cherry and rich cedar aromas and has voluminous body and weight. Dark sweet black fruit, salted milk chocolate, liquid slate, and a wealth of spices on a long finish.

Winemaker Dave Phinney has crafted an excellent 2018 Côtes Catalanes Grenache D66, blending 85% Grenache with 15% Syrah. It boasts big black-cherry fruit, plus some crushed stone and hints of Mexican chocolate on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and concentrated, with a long, layered finish. It should drink well through at least 2030.
